The rapist, Rocky Shay Franklin, is now serving a 40-year prison term for sexual exploitation. It’s these kinds of videos — uploaded without any verification of the age or consent of those depicted — that now drive Mickelwait’s fight to knock Pornhub out of business. Pornhub, launched in 2007 and based in Montreal, lets users upload amateur and professional porn videos in much the same way users upload to YouTube. For those of us who care about the injustice of sexual crime and desire to stand in real solidarity with its victims, our activism must include holding to account all individuals and corporations that participate in exploitation.

Investigation and legal action

Another woman said an anonymous person sent a video she appeared in to her grandmother. Now with two children, she said she worries what she will tell them if the video ever surfaces again. Another one of the Jane Doe plaintiffs in January 2016 “submitted a content removal request to MindGeek, begging to have her video removed because of the lack of consent and harassment she was under,” the complaint said. She sent a second request that month asking MindGeek to remove the video from Tube8.com, another MindGeek property, the lawsuit said. Her third takedown request came in May 2017 “after MindGeek continued to publish her video on PornHub.com,” the complaint said. Aside from the main criminal prosecution of Pratt, Wolfe and the others, the GirlsDoPorn case has also spawned other related criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits.

Pratt fled the country during the civil trial but was arrested on a San Diego warrant in late 2022 by Spanish National Police in Madrid. All of Pratt’s co-defendants have either accepted plea deals or been found guilty for their involvement in GirlsDoPorn, court records show. Pratt’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to USA TODAY’s message for comment on Wednesday. Victims who consumed alcohol or smoked marijuana were directed to make a recorded statement saying that they were not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, even though they had just smoked marijuana or drank alcohol.

• In late July, one of Pratt’s coconspirators, 40-year-old Matthew Isaac Wolfe, pleaded guilty to committing sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion.
• At just 22 years old, she was lured into traveling to California for what she thought was an above-board modeling job.
• In trial, defense attorneys argued that the women were over 18, understood what they were doing, accepted payment and in some cases returned to San Diego again and again to make more videos.
• The videos were heavily monetized and globally distributed on Pornhub, the world’s largest and most popular porn site.
• That suit caught the attention of prosecutors when it went to trial in 2019, touching off the criminal investigation.

After this mysterious vacation, he flew from Tijuana, Mexico to New Zealand, and his trail has gone cold ever since. • At this point, there was no longer a company left for MindGeek to partner with.
• They sued a total of 13 affiliated businesses and individuals, including owner Michael Pratt, actor Andre Garcia, and videographer Matthew Wolfe.
• The same goes for all of its fake modeling websites, such as BeginModeling.com, which were used to trick women into thinking they were a legitimate company.

On Tuesday, Pratt pleaded not guilty to charges including sex trafficking, production of child pornography and sex trafficking of a minor. Most of the video shoots took place in San Diego – at local hotels and short-term rental units. Although the women were promised that the video shoots would be brief, they often took hours. Pratt, who was the owner of the website GirlsDoPorn, was charged in October 2019 in the Southern District of California with sex trafficking crimes in connection with a scheme to deceive and coerce young women to appear in pornographic videos.
